Bakuna

This former plantation has been transformed into a protected natural area

Bakuna is a former plantation area of approximately 400 hectares, located in the southeast of Bonaire. The area has high ecological potential and contains important cultural and historical features, including old plantation structures, wells, and caves.

For decades, free-roaming goats and donkeys have prevented natural vegetation recovery in Bakuna. Continuous grazing has resulted in erosion, reduced biodiversity, and limited regeneration of native trees and shrubs.

The Bakuna project focuses on restoring the area by removing these long-standing pressures and allowing natural processes to recover. The project follows a phased approach, combining protection, restoration, and long-term management.

Key activities within the project include the construction of a perimeter fence, the removal of invasive herbivores, protection of an important bat maternity roost, and the maintenance of low-impact access for hikers and mountain bikers.

Temporary restrictions may apply for visitors during specific activities and are clearly communicated on site with signs.
